History of Economic Thought


This course introduces the students to the history of economic thought and the most influential economists of all time. The course adopts both a historical as well as an analytical approach in order to show how the concepts used in contemporary economics have evolved in time. The course also emphasizes the historical nature of economics and economic theory. The context of the course is the following: Classical political economy (Adam Smith & David Ricardo), Marxist political economy (Karl Marx), Keynesian Economics (John Maynard Keynes), Schumpeterian Economics (Joseph Alois Schumpeter), and Neoclassical Economics (Robert Solow).
