Prof. Dr. Panayotis G. Michaelides

Prof. Dr. Panayotis G. MICHAELIDES is a Full Professor at the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and f. Research Associate at the London School of Economics (LSE). He has also served for several years as Director of the Laboratory of Theoretical and Applied Economics and Law, at NTUA.

He is recognised among the top 0.05% of Economists in the world (ScholarGPS, 2026), and his research is among the most downloaded worldwide (IDEAS-RePEc, 2026). A prolific author, he has authored 250 papers (Research-Gate, 2025), including more than 120 in refereed Journals (Research-Gate, 2026), as well as ten (10) books. He has also received the Highly Commended Paper Award for Excellence from Emerald.

He has acted as a Referee for more than sixty (60) Journals, and has twice (2) been selected to act as a referee for works by Nobel Prize laureates.

Also, he authored an international book titled "History of Economic Ideas", which has reached 11,000 online accesses, and another one titled "21 Equations that Shaped the World Economy", which has reached 15,000 online accesses, achieved organically with zero ads or paid promotion. Both books are published by Palgrave Macmillan - Springer, with the second book carrying a front-cover endorsement by a Nobel Prize winner in Economics They are currently being translated into French and Greek.

He has 25 years of teaching experience at all levels, from first-year undergraduate students to postgraduate MSc and PhD programs. He has taught or conducted research, at the London School of Economics (UK), DELFT University of Technology (NL), the University of Groningen (NL), the University of Klagenfurt (AU), the National Technical University of Athens (GR), Panteion University (GR), and the Hellenic Open University (GR).

He maintains a network of over seventy (70) international co-authors, and his work, funded by the EU, and international corporations, has seen him in roles such as Expert Consultant, Scientific Director, and Principal Investigator.

Among other projects, he has served as Principal Investigator on a Horizon 2020 project (SIRIUS; €2.5M) and as a senior researcher on another Horizon 2020 project (InGRID-2; €9.3M). He has collaborated with, among others, Philip Morris International, Eurobank, the General Confederation of Greek Labour Unions, the Athens Prefecture, and the State Scholarship Foundation.

His articles have been published in top-tier Journals (ABS-4 and ABS-3), including: Quantitative Methods and Statistics: Journal of the Royal Statistical Society; European Journal of Operational Research; Annals of Operations Research. Economics: Cambridge Journal of Economics; Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control; Energy Economics. Financial Economics: Journal of Financial Stability; Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money; International Journal of Finance and Economics. Finance and Accounting: Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting; International Review of Financial Analysis. Technological Change: Journal of Technology Transfer; Technological Forecasting and Social Change. Infrastructure Economics: Annals of Tourism Research; Transportation Research-Part E.

His research has appeared, among other prestigious outlets, in (i) the London School of Economics (LSE) Research Online Documents on Economics, (ii) the Swiss Finance Institute (SFI) Research Paper Series, and (iii) the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) Discussion Papers.

He has served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the London School of Economics (LSE), and holds a PhD from NTUA. He earned a five-year Diploma (Dipl. Eng) in Mechanical Engineering from NTUA, providing a very strong foundation in Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research, and Computer Science. He also holds three (3) MSc degrees: an MSc in Economic Theory (AUEB), an MSc in Mathematical Modeling (NTUA), and an MBA from AUEB and the University of Groningen (NL).
